Over the last few months it’s been difficult to avoid Occupy Wall Street in the news. The antics of some of the more radical “occupiers” have been front page news for months. As in any movement, the radical members of the group often obscure the true intent of the group. One may ask; does this protest actually have a point? The answer to this question is yes.
Societal and income inequality are rampant in the United States. According to the New York Times, the top 1% of earners in this nation take home nearly 25% of wealth annually; this compares to levels similar prior to the Great Depression. In terms that are slightly easier to visualize, this means that 3,688,575 earn 25% of the GDP while nearly 11 million individuals are earning 75% of the wealth. Many U.S. citizens, including the poker 1 percent, immigrants and non-immigrants alike, believe in what is known as “The American Dream.” In short, this dogma states that if you work hard enough you can become well off in the U.S. The current system means that The American Dream is unattainable for most people. The point of the Occupy Wall Street movement is to make The American Dream attainable for everyone.
An additional reason for the Occupy Wall Street movement is to restore some sort of order to the financial sector. There has been a mortgage crisis over the last several years. What does this “crisis” mean for the average citizen? The inner-workings of the financial sector are exceptionally complex and difficult to understand. Luckily, my father is an economist, and a professor, which means that I have a readily available person to explain what I think of as “economic mumbo-jumbo” to me. In layman’s terms (and I certainly include myself in this) banks began to sell packages of investments amongst each other. A variety of risky investments were packaged together with mortgages, which were considered “safe” (although, the French word for death is “mort”, so how safe are they really?) When the risky investments began to fall through, housing prices inflated, people refinanced (giving the financial sector more money) and people began to pay insanely high prices for homes. Once people realized that a three bedroom home with two bathrooms and an unfinished basement wasn’t worth $1 million, the bubble created by this investment practice popped and people were left with homes they couldn’t afford. This was not possible before a “financial reform” act passed in 1999. The point of Occupy Wall Street is to put those regulations back into place so that people aren’t being cheated by the system they invest in.
The point of the Occupy Wall Street movement is to create some financial sanity after years of deregulation and corruption. Individuals participating in this movement are not lazy. They simply want the chance to succeed in a nation where millions of citizens are working in well-paying jobs and have the opportunity to provide for their families. They want to live in a nation where education is available to all. And really, isn’t that what we all want?
The Occupy Wall Street movement powered by the general public against the poker 1 percent rich and powerful elite that run the Wall Street. This movement initiated on 17th of September, 2011 in Manhattan’s Financial District, Liberty Square. Since then, this movement has quite successfully spread over a 100 cities in the United States of America. This is why it is often called the 99% movement as well, as it has the complete general population with it, except that 1% of the rich class whom this movement is against. This movement has even spread globally in more than 1,500 cities. The public is trying desperately to fight against the power of multinational corporations, major banks, the roll that Wall Street played in the economic collapse, the greatest recession that hit America, and the democratic process taking place for years.
The main inspiration behind the Occupy Wall Street movement was after witnessing how the general public brought a revolution in Tunisia and Egypt. This brought the citizens in America to get on their feet and fight against the 1% of the rich class that are writing the unfair global economy which is having a grave impact on the future lives of the public. The Occupy Poker Wall Street movement has no leader and includes people of all colors, political persuasions, race, ethnicity, and gender. The only common thing that they all share is that they belong to that 99% population who no longer wants to tolerate the corruption and greed of that 1% population of the rich class. They say that they are adopting the famous Arab Spring tactics to bring out the revolution that Arabs brought in their countries.
On 30th September, 2011 a General Assembly that represents the Occupy Wall Street movement first published its formal declaration. This publication mentioned how it acknowledges how the future of all human races depends on the cooperation offered by the members of this assembly, how this assembly must work to protect the rights of the public, that the individuals will be given full right to protect their own rights and the rights of their neighbors if ever this assembly got corrupt too, and that any democratic government cannot exist without the just power of its people and corporations should not attempt to make their wealth from the earth or the people living in it.
This movement and its assembly aim to come forward and help its people at a time when corporations have decided to give more preference to their profit rather than their people, preference to their own interests rather than what is justice, and oppressing others rather than giving equality. The main motive behind this movement is to prevent all these unjust acts from happening and to give more preference to the rights of the common people living in America and all across the globe. Many other labor unions have given their endorsements to this movement and thus giving it more strength. This is what is keeping it strong after all this time.
The local Occupy events strike a bitter cord with many online poker players who have found themselves having a lot of trouble finding a decent game after the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. These events are about standing up to the big corporations and governmental branches that take advantage of the less well off to make even more money for themselves. It was just that type of greedy action that led to the passage of the bill, which makes it even more important for poker players around the world to stand up to it. The key to fighting back is education, so read on and find out what you need to know to combat this immoral act.
First off, you need to know what the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement act really did so that you don’t end up embarrassing yourself by saying something that isn’t true. It is important to understand that it is not a ban on online gambling in the United States. What the bill does is make it illegal for US banks to work with international gambling sites. This means that the bill makes it illegal for your bank to give any money to an international online poker site. As a result, it becomes impossible to play poker at these sites because you have no way of handling the money, and as such these sites have shut their doors to US players. This isn’t a direct ban, but because of the sites blocking US players, it has had a similar effect.
The next thing you need to know is why this bill went through. As with every anti gambling measure that’s ever been passed or proposed, the motives given were moral. The government officials that pushed it through told us that it was to protect us from ourselves. They didn’t want us gambling our lives away online. Obviously, this isn’t the real reason they did it. It is still possible to gamble online in the US, not to mention all the other ways there are to lose your money.
The real reason this bill was pushed through was money. International gambling sites have no obligation to pay taxes to the US government. That means that the government doesn’t get their slice of the pie, and they don’t like that. They don’t care if your part of the poker 1 percent or like to gamble; they just want to make sure you do it in a manner that makes them money. This is a classic example of the 1% taking advantage of the 99% to make even more cash.
Now that you understand the bill, you need to start fighting back. It can seem intimidating to try to do anything in this political environment, but the Occupy Wall Street protests prove that you can make a difference no matter who you are. Start writing your local politicians. Organize petitions and protests. If you are willing to put some work into getting organized and united, then nothing can stop you. Don’t let the 1% walk all over you any longer.
A newly initiated movement by the name Occupy Wall Street is actually quite different from the ones that have been going on for some time now. The main difference is that this movement represents who the real and original protesters were, who the heart of this movement are basically, are those people who have been living in poverty and pain because of the greed and lack of responsibility that wall street has been depicting. You will not find the regular liberal protest groups, or the funded media mouths participating in this movement. You will find the real and actual people afflicted by the mess-ups of Wall Street participating in Occupy Wall Street movement.
The main differences that represent this movement from others is that you can see how young, focused, yet spontaneous this movement is and this is exactly the reason why it is going to be so much more effective as compared to other movements. But the main problem lies in the fact that today our media has become so lazy that it just sits and prefers to rely on whatever fact sheets they get their hands on and on simply copying from other sources and getting a hold of all the drawn up lists of demands that they get from press conferences and other online sources like the various formal progressive coalitions. The result of all this is that no one is properly covering what the participants of Occupy Wall Street really want, and how they want to accomplish their goals.
In just a few weeks the movement called Occupy Wall Street has ignited in many cities across the United States. And people believe that this movement actually has the power to stay for longer and possibly even affect the upcoming elections this year. The main seed of powerful influence against the destruction, greed, and total lack of responsibility and accountability of Poker Wall Street lies in this movement. Another ray of hope is seen when facts like this movement has strong hands in the Democrats, Congress, and White House begin to surface up.
This movement is continuously growing and maturing faster than people predicted. In a survey it was found that a larger number of Americans are giving their approval for the Occupy Wall Street movement whereas just a small number is not approving it. It is also been noticed that the protesters in this movement actually have a much higher approval from the public as compared to the Congress. You can easily ignore what the mainstream media news is being delivered as the fact is that this movement is more serious that it is being shown. And in fact a lot more effective and so some serious changes and effects will be noticed not too long from now.
Many people are saying that the powerful elite are finally getting a taste of the medicine they have being making themselves all these years. The general public is vastly favoring this movement and it seems like the elite is finally going to give in.
Over the years the trend of online poker has increased a lot. People from all over the world have found a cheaper alternative to enjoy poker games and casinos without having to take the time and money to travel to Las Vegas to enjoy casino life. More and more people around the world are now exploring online poker and are becoming more interested and addicted to this new means of enjoying the game while still being able to make bets and win cash. But with its fame and widespread popularity, many protests have also surfaced up. Many people are protesting against the websites and online casinos that are offering online poker and other games to people around the world.
People believe online poker to be a waste of our precious times and not forget all the money that people lose in bets they make on useless poker games over the internet. These people have come across to form groups to support their protest through various means especially using Facebook. There is a page on Facebook that is especially dedicated to all those people who wish to join in on the official poker protests against those websites that are promoting gambling over the internet. Likewise several laws have also been passed by the government to regulate these online casinos and its games like poker.
The main reason of concern for people is that these online websites are the way to breaking the anti – gambling laws, money laundering, bank fraud, and several other crimes committed by these companies on such a large scale. However poker players from all across the world do not want online poker to be banned. They say that it is a harmless game and that no one is being forced to play it. Therefore stopping people would mean taking their freedom and liberty from them. Online poker players mainly protest on the grounds that online poker for them is not an attempt to win cash but just a way to relax, have a break from all the troubles and worries of life, and enjoy themselves for awhile. They say it is really not about the money for them. This is why they say that if online poker is not that important to those who are protesting against it they should at least let those who enjoy the game, continue enjoying it.
In 2010 many rallies were taken out to poker protest in front of the white house in support of online poker, saying that it is not a crime. Long marches were seen in front of the Washington State Supreme Court. They were mainly protesting against law that stated anyone caught playing online poker would be conducting a Class C felony. This extreme law was what brought everyone out on the roads in rallies to protest the law. This is why online poker is still going on strong as before and thousands of people from all over the world log in on their computers on a daily basis to enjoy online casinos despite all the criticism and protests against it.
